Wood & Floors Outlet says remember home improvements can mean tax savings
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says that with tax season upon us, it’s a good idea to keep in mind possible tax savings linked to home enhancement.
Under the right circumstances, a home improvement tax deduction can be available.
Marlon said it’s important to know that before trying to qualify for a house improvement tax deduction, homeowners can distinguish the difference between repairs and improvement.
“Repairs generally will not help you when it comes to the tax reduction,” the Denton businessman said.
Home improvement under the guidelines for the home improvement tax reduction is any addition that improves life and quality to a person’s home.
Examples include, but are not limited to: installing a pool, putting in new heating and cooling systems, erecting a fence, installing a driveway, adding a room or a garage, putting in insulation, topping off the house with a new roof or beatifying the homeowner’s yard with new landscaping.
The major difference in repairs – which do not qualify for a tax deduction – is that they generally are an effort to slow down or stop any depreciation on the homeowner’s property, including the home itself. Some things that generally fit in this category are fixing plumbing or any other types of leaks, repainting or repairing broken items in general.
In the case of remodeling, which can be beneficial tax-wise, a general rule is that homeowners can try to include anything under home general improvement in order to qualify for a deduction.
“The key is to make sure the expenses are closely related,” Marlon said.
Another area to concentrate on when qualifying for a tax deduction involves the interest rate on any loan issued to make the improvements. Deducting loan points in the year the loan was received is additionally beneficial. When refinancing a home to improve it, the homeowner is able to deduct the loan points that year.
“I hope this helps people in understanding what qualifies for a home improvement tax deduction,” Marlon said. “Remember, April 15 is just around the corner.”

Wood & Floors Outlet helps budget flooring needs for 2010
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says that with the New Year rolling around, it’s a good time to budget for spring and summer home improvement projects.
“Taxes can make or break how much you can afford to spend on home projects,” Marlon said. “It’s a good idea to find out early in the year what you owe or will get back so you can start budgeting.”
A good plan is to determine what your home truly needs versus what would be a nice thing to have – whether it is a wish list item or an immediate necessity.
“You should take into account what your budget can stand,” the Denton businessman said.
One way Wood & Floors Outlet can help with your budgeting needs is through its e-commerce site. The site includes prices and product pictures and information.
The site also offers an on-line calculator. It can be helpful in determining how many boxes of tile or how much carpet you will need.
“Once you’ve selected your materials, we come out and give you a free in-home estimate, including labor,” Marlon said.

Wood & Floors Outlet offers flooring tips
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says that with the New Year, make a resolution to keep your Hardwood Floors in top shape all year long.
“We hardwood lovers all want less maintenance, right?” asked the Denton businessman. “Well, there are a few minor ways to keep them looking great all the time!”
1 Sweep or vacuum (with no beater bar) regularly. Dirt buildup is the first thing to scratch your hardwood floor.
2. Never mop your floor with water – as it will dull the finish over time, not to mention damage the structure (water and wood don’t mix).
3. Do Not use oil soaps, liquid, or past wax products or household products that contain lemon oil, or ammonia. Find the manufactured approved cleaner for your floor.
4. We love our pets – so keep the nails trimmed often.
5. Make sure all furniture have felt pads to keep from scratching the flooring.
Bonus – Use a humidifier to keep wood movement to a minimum – especially solids. (A humidifier can be found at most hardware stores)

Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says Anso has upped the ante!
Shaw industries will be introducing a new lineup of carpets made with Anso nylon fiber. The carpets will carry limited lifetime warranties on stain and soil resistance, as well as a lifetime warranty on pet urine stains. They will also carry 20-year warranties on quality assurance, texture retention and abrasive wear, and will feature a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee.
Shaw’s Anso nylon is also green, as it is made with 25 percent recycled content. Shaw recently received certification for the post consumer recycled fiber by third party company – Scientific Certification Systems.

Wood & Floors Outlet on board with lead paint law that will affect industry
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says he wants to keep people in the loop about a new law set to take effect in April.
The law will require Environmental Protection Agency certification of contractors renovating more than six square feet in a home built before 1978, according to the NWFA. As part of the EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program, anyone performing renovation activity — including wood flooring installation, repairs and refinishing — is required to attain certification.
The new provisions require company certification, employee training and certification and additional recordkeeping to document compliance.
“I will be taking the necessary steps to get the certification done by deadline,” said Marlon, owner of the Denton flooring business.
Certification requires completion of an eight-hour training course from the EPA and will cost $300; certification will need to be renewed every five years.
Why Do You Need to Be Concerned About Lead? Lead is a toxic metal that was used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Lead also can be emitted into the air from motor vehicles and industrial sources, and lead can enter drinking water from plumbing materials. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children six years old and under are most at risk.
Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.
To protect against this risk, on April 22, 2008, the EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead safe practices and other actions aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the rule, beginning in April 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.
Marlon said that he and his contractors “have always been cautious when performing installation work, including containing the work area, minimizing dust and cleaning up thoroughly.”

Wood & Floors Outlet helps city of Denton grow
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, says that his business plays a part in the ongoing growth of the city of Denton.
“We recently completed the flooring in the new AutoZone parts store located at the intersection of Hickory Creek and Teasley Road,” Marlon said.
The job included nearly 4,000 square feet of commercial vinyl tile flooring and installation services.
“We were given three days to complete the project, and we exceeded those requirements by completing the installation, all trim and finishing wax in two days time,” the Denton businessman said.
“Wood & Floors Outlet was chosen by a construction contractor out of Austin by our certification with the state of Texas as an HUB vendor, to complete the project,” Marlon said.

Wood & Floors Outlet carries the earth-friendly Mullican line of flooring in its showroom
Businessman Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet of Denton, wants to know his Texas business is designed to give you H.O.P.E. (Help Our Polluted Environment).
That’s because Mullican Flooring is unveiling a new line of engineered flooring that has been labeled 100 Pure by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). And Wood Floors & Outlet will be a great place to find that flooring.
The FSC Pure claim and FSC 100 percent label apply to products made exclusively from materials originating in FSC-certified forests.
FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible and environmentally appropriate management of the world’s forests.
Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide.
FSC is a certification system that provides internationally recognized standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry.
Mullican already introduced their Green Haven line earlier this year, making the company the first to offer a solid domestic FSC 100 percent Pure flooring. The certification means that the flooring is made entirely from wood originating from FSC certified forests. The Green Haven line is popular with developers and builders looking to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements.

Wood & Floors Outlet owner has some hot tips on cool comfort for your floors
Businessman Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet of Denton, says your home should not only make you comfortable, but your flooring as well.
“You need to be aware of the importance of a constant temperature in your home,” Allen said.
He explained that the temperature of your home affects all of your flooring, almost no matter what type you have.
“With vinyl, carpet, laminates and especially hardwoods, the temperature can play a part in your floor’s performance and durability,” the Denton businessman said. “Cold weather primarily affects floors the most.”
He explained that cold weather can stiffen the backing on most carpets, making the carpets tough and possibly in need of re-stretching.
“With vinyl, laminate and wood, these particular products have a tendency to shrink to some degree,” Allen said. “So remember during the holidays when we go to visit family or on vacation, don’t try to save money by turning off your air conditioning and heating system – it may cost you a new floor.”

Wood & Floors Outlet: A Day in the Life of Marlon
Marlon Allen, owner of Wood & Floors Outlet, would need a lot of flooring for the countless miles he travels in a workday.
For some, just reading about a day in the life of Marlon might make them tired.
For starters, on this Tuesday, he was up at 5:40 a.m., and spent his first waking hours getting himself “in order.”
At 6:30 a.m., he began a half hour of home Bible study.
“I believe in Him,” Marlon said simply.
From 6:30 to 7:15, he readied his 6-year-old son, Keadrin, for kindergarten. His other child is a daughter, 4-year-old Morgan.
At 7:20 a.m., Marlon was running around the pond behind his house: two miles worth.
Once home, he got ready for a long day of work.
From 8:30-9 a.m., Marlon can be found at home improving his business knowledge, which could include reading a book on business or following up on a business plan.
From 9-9:30 a.m. today, Marlon was in his office at his Denton business, getting feedback from the prior day, following up on orders, etc.
At 9:30 a.m., Marlon left his home for his first job, an estimate/measurement for carpet at a Garland residence. Then it was off to a manufacturer in Farmers Branch to pick up a back-ordered transitional piece for a job in Grapevine.
From Farmers Branch, he drove to Grapevine to inspect a job his team is working on.
Then, it was back to Denton. He then headed to his first local job of the day, a new AutoZone under construction.
“They have the walls up already, and I took measurements,” Marlon said.
His next stop was First People’s Jewelers at 117 N. Elm Street, which is downtown On the Square.
He can’t help bragging about what happened at the jewelers within the past week. The business wanted 1,200 feet of wood flooring. It was about a four-day job. However, the business didn’t want its customers inconvenienced by installation work.
“We began the job right after they closed on Saturday and had them ready for business when they opened on Monday morning,” Marlon said.
Today, Marlon returned for an inspection on the work that was finished (and yes, he was there over the weekend while the installers were doing their thing).
After leaving the jewelers, Marlon returned to his business at 1103 Dallas Drive, which is off Interstate 35 near the University of North Texas.
There, he sent out estimates to potential customers, performed follow-up calls, revisited paperwork on clients from recent weeks and months, and did a sundry of everyday business tasks.
For the next hour, from 4-5 p.m., Marlon worked with customers in the Denton County store.
Then, it was off to the city of Southlake in Tarrant County.
“One of my customers was in a Home Depot and recommended me to someone living in Southlake,” Marlon said.
He finally finished his workday, returning to his Denton home about 7:40 p.m.
It was a 14-hour day.
A little family time, some shuteye and then he planned to be up at 5:40 a.m. the next day “ready to do it again.”
